The Goodwood Revival Review

Goodwood restored circuit

The Goodwood Revival which took place Friday, Saturday and Sunday 17th, 18th and 19th September was the world’s largest historic motor race meeting. It was an opportunity to get away from the modern world and revel in the romance of motor racing as it used to be.

The circuit remains the same from its heyday (1948 – 1966) and although restored, it is unchanged and everything is exactly as it was. It really was a weekend of nostalgia.

There was a programme of racing events across the entire weekend including St Mary’s Trophy for saloon cars and the one hour RAC TT Celebration for high value GT cars. These exceptional races offered drama and excitement.

In addition to the motor racing there was a number of track parades and demonstrations which took place throughout the weekend. There were many famous faces , including several star drivers.  One very well known celebrity of motor racing was Graeme Murray Walker OBE, who was there for his book signing. He is much more than simply a commentary legend, he is a national institution. Murray Walker had been active in TV Formula 1 commentary for over 50 years, up until his official retirement in 2001.

In between the racing there were many fashions to admire. Many people dressing from the 40s to 60s period, along with traditional fairground rides and over 200 classic cars, trucks and buses to see.

The magnificant World War II aircraft such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang performed their arobatic displays throughout the weekend above this former Battle of Britain airfield.

Period tractors towing passenger trailers drove around the circuit perimeter allowing people to enjoy the magnificant views of the racing action from the spectator banks. There were also shops to browse in selling Goodwood Revival merchandise.

‘The Revival is an event, which is unique in the world and absolutely second to none.’
