Decorating with Blue and White

Posted by Tasha, on February 18th, 2011, under Home Makeovers, New England News, RSS

Blue and White have been used together in interiors for centuries, in traditional Delft tiles and patterned china and in country style fabrics such as gingham and ticking. The beauty of blue and white is that any combination of shades works effortlessly together. White furniture makes a room lighter anyway, but set against different shades of blue gives a fresh  crispness, and a cool, airy feel to a space. The Manhattan Range of White Bedroom furniture featured here emphasizes the brightness that can be acheived with a minimum of effort.

A square boxy room can be immediately transformed with colour applied to one of the walls and this has become increasingly popular with so many DIY and home and interior decorating series being shown on television recently. Many new-build houses and appartments lack the architectural features of a beautiful window frame, an interesting ceiling shape or a panelled wall often found in older properties which make it easier to have an all-white or all over colour scheme. One blue wall can still add the depth you need but without the colour making your room appear smaller.

Blue and White can also create a dramatic and eye-catching display, there are so many designs of blue and white plates and pottery from all over the world- from china manufactured by Wedgewood,Doulton and Spode to the blue and white morroccan style, china from Marrakech. Traditional Chinese designs and even the bright turquoises and blues that can be found in Turkey with their contemporary design would look stunning displayed or stored on Dressers such as The New Hampshire Small Dresser,  Rhode Island Dresser or the Maine Multi Drawer Dresser. You don’t have to be a collector to appreciate the pottery designs with their vivid colors and intricate detailing, maybe you have just spotted a bargain on holiday and thought of having it as some  fantastic and eye-catching decor for your home!

Create a stylish white work space

Create a stylish white work space

Like many people, I have been inspired to bring out the sewing machine, crochet hooks and knitting needles and try my hand at creating my own handcrafted accessories for my home. Kirstie Allsopp and ‘Kirstie’s Homemade Home‘ has a lot to answer for!!! My successes so far include curtains for the living room and a collection of patchwork cushions.

For most creative people, being able to have a dedicated work room would be such a welcome addition to a home; and if you have the space available it is really a very simple room to set up.

The starting point for my work room would have to be a Maine Desk – a stylish white table desk that provides a great work space for laying out plans and patterns and doubles as a great sewing desk. I would add a Newport White Dining Chair  (complete with a colourful homemade seat pad!) For storage, I would choose the Maine Chest with 13 Drawers; a beautiful piece of furniture with a multitude of drawers of different shapes and sizes ideal for storing and separating all my crafty bits and bobs. I would insert bright fabrics into the perspex holders on the chest, helping to create a bright creative atmosphere.

Above my desk I would hang a homemade pinboard, made using bright and colourful fabrics. The other two must haves would be a magazine rack for my collection of craft and home magazines, and a wastepaper bin for the scribblings and ideas that just don’t quite work!

If you are inspired to personalise your home with your own unique creations, I can thoroughly recommend Kirstie’s Homemade Home published by Hodder & Stoughton to accompany the Channel 4 series.
